Brass cuff etched with pattern of the micro-structure of gold. The shape itself is also representative of gold under a microscope. This piece is a part of a larger collection of work inspired by gold called 'Glare' in which Kate Ellen toyed with the idea of value--thrusting perceived and real value against each other-- forcing brass and other 'valueless' materials to stand in and 'pretend' to be golden. Kate Ellen is endlessly fascinated by how our collective momentum determines it’s value. All the pieces in the 'Glare' collection have been influenced by gold, the gold rush of California, the periodic table of elements, and metallurgy.
